Description

Beautify Junkyards - Nova

Beautifully languid, dreamlike, psychedelic pop; Nova is the third Ghost Box album by Lisbon based band Beautify Junkyards.

Nova has a wide instrumental palette with ethereal vocals from João Branco Kyron and Martinez. Kyron’s synths are now augmented by recent band recruit, Bernard Loopkin. Antonio Watts’ mesmerising percussion beautifully underpins proceedings with the bass & guitars of Sergue and João Moreira intertwined throughout to lend a sinuous, human feel. There’s a mood evocative of 60s & 70s movie soundtracks, library music & vintage electronica. Lyrically the songs are surreal and dreamlike, taking stylistic cues from situationism, cut-up & similar techniques of the psychedelic imagination.

Beautify Junkyards have always enjoyed working with writing and performing collaborators. Nova is no exception and features some very special guests. Paul Weller sings and plays guitar on the co-written song, “Sister Moon”. Dorothy Moskowitz (of United States of America) co-wrote and sings on “Turn the Tide”. Jesse Chandler (of Pneumatic Tubes, Midlake and Mercury Rev ) contributes flute on “Groundstar”

Julian House’s beautiful and carefully researched design work for the album draws its inspiration from the situationist and revolutionary underground press of 1960s Europe. The heavyweight vinyl LP version comes with a free download code card.

Reviews

The hole left by the late Trish Keenan's hauntologic pop project Broadcast feels greater and more profound by the day. Unusually, the group who come closest to filling it is a band from Lisbon. On Nova, Beautify Junkyards lean further into the sampleadelic, accentuating their bleary psych with florid sound design and hallucinatory textures.
UNCUT

...the more melodic end of the 'hauntological' genre scale with their mix of troplcalia, '60s pop and warm synth tones
Mojo

This exceptional Portuguese cosmic folk outfit may be the best band you’ve never heard of.... An enjoyable recording from this talented group. Highly recommended!
The Big Takeover

Latin rhythms, electronic fizzles and melodies that flit like an elusive butterfly, playfully refusing to be pinned down.
Electronic Sound

On their fifth studio album, Portuguese collective Beautify Junkyards delve deeper into electronic abstraction and forge a sound that's richer, more nuanced and enticing than ever before.
Shindig

The songs on the record have a siren-like effect, but rather than luring a listener into danger, it’s more like an enrapturing ride through a window into one’s own reveries.
It's Psychedelic Baby
